ICAATS Selected: Goal For It!

What do you wish to achieve in life? What expectations do you have? What are your goals? What would improve your life? How can you make this world a better place to live in? These are all questions which are put to us or we ask of others throughout life to help us focus on our goals for the future.

How many words or phrases can you think of with the same meaning as the word "goal". Free Content for Blogs Aim, objective, intention, end result, deadline, purpose, mission, target, aspiration, dream - the list goes on.

Whichever term you use, planning and achieving goals in life separates humans living worthwhile lives from animals existing purely by instinct.

For many, setting goals is considered to be an outdated process. Rigorous testing of the process of goal setting by researchers Edwin A. Locke and Gary P. Latham has been undertaken and the following conclusions have been arrived at. These findings (as detailed in their book - A Theory of Goal Setting and Task Performance) may help you plan and achieve your own goals for your future.

1. Survival and a happy state of mind are both achieved as a result of goal-directed action.

2. Committing to difficult goals will involve more effort and perseverance and will ultimately produce a more worthwhile achievement.

3. More than one goal can be successfully pursued at any given time.

4. It is essential to have confidence in reaching your goal.

5. Specific and challenging goals encourage you to make more of an effort.

6. You must be committed to your goal in order to achieve it.

7. Feedback is essential so that adjustments in effort can be made.

8. Unrealistic goals lead to less effort and you may give up altogether so always make your intentions realistic.

9. Perseverance and hard work are more likely to lead to eventual achievement.

10. Challenging and specific goals are required to direct a person’s knowledge and skills.

"New Year’s Resolutions" usually fail, but maybe once in a while you have proved to be determined enough to carry out your resolutions. Looking at the list of essential goal-achievement conditions mentioned above, you will see that on the occasions you have actually achieved your newly set resolutions, or any other goals for that matter, several of these conditions have been adhered to. Not meeting some of Locke and Latham’s conditions is probably the reason you have failed to achieve some of your goals in the past.

Use the above as a check list and make sure you goals are realistic and achievable - then Goal For It!!

ICAATS Selected: The Importance Of Life Skills Coaching

Giving yourself to other people and offering your expertise and/or skills to help change their life in any positive way is a profound way to effect the world we live in. Whether you are a coach, a teacher, a counselor, or if you just have wealth of knowledge to offer people you can help shape the our society.

Not only that, it can be very healthy for you as well because let’s face it, it feels good to genuinely help others and know that you are making a difference in their life.

Due to the stress and pressure of most people’s lives there is much need for people with skills in the area of life coaching. However, if you want to become a life coach you need to be in a good place yourself, as there is nothing more annoying than people who don’t practice what they preach.

To Become a Great Life Skills Coach You Must Train First

If a person wishes to become adept at life skills coaching, it may be necessary to first take life skills training, which is the study of behavior in humans. People are generally known to have their own behavior patterns that can lead, in some instances, to negative turns or choices in their lives. People are all very different and you need to be aware of these differences and how they do or don’t affect people’s behavior.

This is where life skills coaching comes into play. Your job is to:
* Monitor your client’s behaviors
* Help them make the right choices
* Recognizing the wrong choices
* Gain back control of their life
* Set realistic goals for them

Specializing Your Life Coaching Skills

You also want to specialize your life coaching expertise. Most people who are good at counseling are usually great at coaching in one area and only good at others. Stick to what you are great at because in order to make a profound difference in someone’s life you need to be a great life coach, not just a good one.

For example if you are trained and knowledgeable in business coaching your specialized skills in this area will help others succeed in the entrepreneurial or corporate world, but don’t go trying to help a mentally ill person who is contemplating suicide. Leave that up to those who specialize in mental health.

One thing that is actually a little ironic about this is that once you start to specialize in one area you will find that you are also improving that part of your life as well. By teaching others you will learn even more about yourself. Let’s face it no one is perfect and even life coaches can still improve on their life skills.

One thing that is for certain is that to be a good life skills coach you need to have conviction. This means that you have the power to motivate others by your words.

Motivation is the only way you can lead someone to change. You Can’t change someone for them, you can only motivate them to change. I learned that a long time ago and it was exhausting trying to help other people who don’t really want to help themselves.

There is one thing to watch out for, however if you are currently a life coach, or pursuing the profession. Don’t get too emotionally attached to your clients. Yes you want to help them, but you don’t want to hurt yourself by trying too hard or investing so much of yourself into them if they continue to make poor choices.

ICAATS Resource: How To Deal With College And University Exams

College life can be a lot of fun but there are college and university exams that need to be taken. Unless you are the type of student who can sail through college and university exams with little or no effort, you're going to have to spend time studying hard in order to pass them. The stressful situations that college exams bring can hold you back if you do not learn how to handle it in a health manner.

You obviously must study before taking your university exams and you should make an effort to review all of the material that was covered in classes thoroughly. Many students get so anxious and worked up that they actually make themselves sick with worry and stress and are unable to recall the information that they studied. Does this sound familiar? If so, you need to find a way to help you relax or you may very well find yourself failing courses.

The sooner you can start preparing for your college exams, the better chance you'll have at scoring high marks. This may sound obvious, but with all the distractions that come along with college life, it can be easy to put off studying until the last minute. Doing this will cause a lot of unnecessary pressure and you're not going to help yourself if you approach your college course preparation this way.

You also need to make sure that you have a study schedule laid out when you're getting ready to take an exam. Lay out a schedule of the material you are going to study and follow the plan. Many college and university students don't remember to build ample rest time into their study plan and end up being too tired to accomplish anything effectively. The best way to prepare for college testing is in short sessions so that you're able to absorb all of the material.

Make sure you get enough sleep and eat properly. If you're not healthy and alert you are going to find your exams much more difficult then they would've been if you had taken proper care of yourself.

At the end of the day, your college examinations are important but they aren't worth making yourself sick over. If you find yourself becoming overly anxious about taking those college exams, consider getting in contact with a tutor who may be able to give you some additional help as needed.

ICAATS Resource: Education - Paying Off Student Loans

Many students accumulate a number of loans during their stay in college. This is most often associated with their their day to day cost of living in obtaining their college degree.

The high cost of education makes students take up these loans. In other countries the cost of education is subsidized by their government but this is not so everywhere. Although grants may be obtained the cost of education is still relatively quite high.

The aim of students are noble. They acquire a good education, be a good citizen and secure their future. The problem arises in repaying the debt.

Payments for student loans usually come at just about the time that they graduate and are supposed to be working. The numerous monthly installments of these student loans along with their different interest rates can sometimes be disturbing. It can bother students so much as to cause them to lose sleep and even get diverted from the normal path of working on their careers.

One thing to do to avoid this inconvenient situation is to try and combine their student loans. This is commonly known as student loan consolidation. It is simply a type of loan which aims to absorb all the previous loans taken by a student. You are trying to consolidate several loans into one. A student will be able to save time and effort as it would be very much easier to handle one payment every month than having several separate payments. Another benefit of this is that it has a lower interest rate than the accumulation of interest rates of the various other student loans. When a student decides to consolidate all his loans, he only has to worry about paying one interest rate and not several different rates on different loans.

Most consolidated loans also offer more flexible and easier repayment options than all the other student loans. A consolidated loan is also generally free of any kind of prepayment penalty, an added benefit that students can take advantage of.

You wouldn't normally delay or waste your time trying to decide. Doing it as early as the opportunity presents itself has its benefits. There may be times when the interest rates on existing loans are expected to rise and this will surely add more to the debt burden.

Do your own research about consolidating your loans and take time to look over the fine print on loan discounts. Think wisely and save yourself unwanted stress and worries.

ICAATS Selected: Useful Guide On Adult Education Programs

By: Janet Jones

If you think your current education background does not serve you well enough, you could still get more education. Some might think it too late, considering age and all, but that is not true. Whatever kind of person you are, someone has got the right kind of education for you. Just look it up.

One interesting topic to any adult you find around you is that of adult education. Even if they think they are unable to do it, many still desire to. There are few who do not hope to be able to better their lots in life. Find them an attractive enough program and you will be surprised at their response.

There are times when you need some kind of professional certification for a job, and then there are times when what you need is just a degree. If you have never gotten that degree, you probably will never get that promotion. Even though you are a couple of years over age, now is as good a time as any to go get it.

Many adults don't want to go back to school. It's like that because they feel too old for it, and besides they have way too many responsibilities. Well, I think you are not being very responsible if you pass up the chance to improve your chances of a better lot in life.

Professional certification or some other kind of qualification is important for those who need to reach the pinnacle of their careers before retiring. This is impossible if you are unable to write the examinations required to get you the certification. For the exam, you have to study. That’s right, I’m talking adult education.

Any type of schooling you have to do after you have become an adult is adult education. Don't ever let anybody tell you different. And if there are people around you who have done it before or are still doing it, so can you. And why not? It only makes you better, doesn't it?

Many times when you see a job vacancy, you might not be able to tell from reading it that they will only give you the job if you have a college or university degree. However you know it somehow, from your guts, that that is just what they want. With some extra education, you could be the very person that they are looking for.

By the content or complexity of an adult education program, you can tell if it is something you can do or not. However, if you are the type who really wanted to do that course, you would not let it make any difference to you if it were complex or not.

Adult education varies from institutions to institutions, and even within respective institutions. Some make plans and preps for short and simple programs while others are only interested in longer lasting ones. It really is up to the students to determine which they want, or which they are qualified to continue with.

You might not be able to get a high school diploma because you can't return to high school at this time of your life. However, several schools have adult education schemes that offer parallels of such qualifications. And then if you want it, you may go further still.

Literacy is not something to be trifled with in today’s age. Every piece of information that is available now is available in way you cannot get to it and make the best use of it if you can’t read and write. That’s why if you can’t read and write, you need to be finding yourself an adult education program in a hurry that will first teach you the basics – how to read and write and do basic things.

You can find adult education for anything you need to learn. The easiest, perhaps, is getting your postgraduate and doctorate degrees because you are already expected to be an adult by the time you go for these. However, more than a few curricula also exist in parallel that are for people who need to start from scratch. Which do you fall into?

In the United States of America, the first big time adult education program in record was that founded by one Mr. Josiah Holbrook in Massachusetts back in the 19th century. Truth be told, it was little more than a spatter of local adults who wanted to make a statement. Well, good thing they did. Much of the advancements realized in adult education today may well be credited to their honor.

A lot of adult training programs are crafted just to suit adults. This opposes the way it is done in regular schools, where the students are expected to adapt to whatever rules are placed by the institution. This does not say however that there aren't laws; only that you are not meant to be made uncomfortable by them.

You can improve on your education if you so desire, anytime you want to; all it costs you is some money and some time away from your family. However what you get back for undergoing that adult education program are increased chances for a promotion at work or for a transfer to a better career. Now you can afford to get your kids into better schools. You know it’s worth it, so why not go for it today?

In a public school system, it is actually a bit easier to conduct an adult education program than in the private sector. The government supplements everything, and all the staff and students need to do is show up. In the private sector a little more deliberation is necessary, but all in all, the program tends to be more successful because it is a bit more personal. It all depends on you really; the adult education you decide to go for should be one that you can afford and that is okay with what you really want.

ICAATS Selected: Adult Basic Education Jobs

By: Clara Ken

There are some learning programs in which adults can participate. These programs, regardless of your creed in life, are particularly appropriate if you have had quite some difficulty with education growing up. Take your time to pick a course that you love and enjoy; you will be the better for it.

The student population in an adult education program is mostly made up of people with families ñ wives and kids. A lot of them also have jobs or some other sources of livelihood; that is how they pay for the program.

Some wonder if the level of education they have is not sufficient for the kind of lives theyíd love to live. Well, it might be as such depending on perspective, but as an adult, you can still do something about it. Just look for programs in lots of institutions that befit your career and start one. In just few years, you will be surprised how your life will improve.

There comes a time in every man's ñ or woman's ñ life when a professional certification might be all they need to secure a good job. I'm talking of a certain specialized job where the employer simply won't compromise. That professional certification might come only if you allow yourself to go back to school to study before writing the exam. Some people think it's worth it, and some don't. However this is what makes the difference between those who take the prize home, and those who lose.

A professional engineer is not just anyone, but someone who has the qualification to be referred to as such. That means they have written some examination to get a degree or certificate, or something. The reason why you donít is because you didnít study further, thinking that because you are an adult now, you donít need to be caught dead in a school. Too bad. The truth is that you can do something about improving your lot in life, if you are really willing.

You probably know about cases where certain jobs are only available for people who have the kind of certification necessary for the job. Adult education sometimes is what you need when you have to deal with some of those situations. That is why a lot of people still gun for it, even if it takes some extra sacrifice.

There are a million and one job opportunities ñ new ones ñ that could suddenly come your way if you went back to school to do some more studying. There are indeed programs specifically meant for adults; several of them, in fact. And the jobs you can get with a better education are quite a lot.

Some job descriptions are mean and straight. They make it quite clear that you are not going to be getting them if you are not qualified on paper. People like to take the trouble to go studying for the better credits. You could too, age notwithstanding.

You can commence your professional education with an adult program. Itís always easier than thought of. Many donít do it because of the fear and the alleged shame of studying at an advanced age. This is a wrong notion. Such fears and shame disappear immediately you commence an adult education program.

The type of adult education program you sign up for is entirely up to you. Almost every institution you find around you has something especially tailored for adults. On the other hand there are schools whose programs are exclusively for grownups; take your pick.

You could have missed out on several opportunities when you were younger, and no one blames you for them. However, there are a lot of things that life still has to offer. They come in different packages like adult education programs and such. Now you can sign up for them, or you can whine for the rest of your life; itís up to you.

You might not have thought of this, but it is difficult to get a grown man or woman to come sit down in a classroom full of people when there are bills to pay. Those who are able to really deserve the kudos. They are smart enough to look beyond the present to a future that's rich, after getting their adult degrees.

Increasingly, adult education has begun to gain grounds in modern day America. People scoffed at it, at some time in the distant past, wondering how it is possible to still school when you brain was fully formed and had no room for anything else. Amazingly this has changed with the sacrifices of a few people who took the bold step and have thus made it.

It has been centuries since adult education started out in some form in the United States. Back in the 18th and 19th centuries, numerous lecture series and discussion societies began in earnest all over the world. All of a sudden, folks who had lived with regrets at missing out on education started to voice up. Today we have all kinds of programs doing the same everywhere.

A lot of adults can still study in their spare time. Not that they are likely to have a lot of those, in between working and providing for their families, getting pregnant and raising babies. However what must be done must be done, and if pushing it through is what adult education takes, then so be it.

Adult education is out of the dark and into the open. For ages now, you could argue that it has been in development. Well that developmental stage is over and the world is hungry to explore. Thousands of adults the world over sign up for classes and courses they have always wanted to do each year. And the good news, many of them succeed and pass out with degrees and certificates. You can too if you really want to!

ICAATS Resources: 3 Dissertation Advices To Get Your Dissertation Published

By: dominic corey

• “I have submitted my dissertation and now I want it to be published. Can you please advice me on how do I get it published?

• “Can you provide me a list of publishers specializing in dissertations and academic topics?”

Day in and day out I receive these type of questions from huge number of students perusing PhD in USA and Masters Degree in UK. To be very honest, I became pretty bored after repeating same answers in response to every other e-mail I receive. So, I decided to write an article on how to get your dissertation published and from now on I will be referring students to this article whoever asks me about dissertation publishing.

If you want to get your dissertation published then you have three options to choose from. To get in-depth knowledge of all the three options, just keep reading below.

  1. Get It Published In a Journal:

There are publishers who focus on publishing dissertations, while various academic publishers could be interested. It all depends on the topic, quality of research, etc. If you are willing to get your dissertation or some parts of your dissertation published in a journal then the advice for you would be to first find a suitable journal.
a) Go through the details and find out its requirements. Most journal websites will have information of their publishing requirements like what kind of content they are looking for, the length of the paper, and other submission guidelines. b) Inquire if you can publish your whole dissertation or only some parts of it? Find out their submission guidelines as well. For example, if they accept content related to your field of study, or if they only accept authors with previous publishing experience, etc.
c) After going through the details submit your work and wait for their reply. It will be reviewed by them and then you will be informed. d) If it is not accepted then go for another journal. If your dissertation is denied by one journal, don’t lose hope. Find another one and keep trying

  1. Get It Published As a Book:

You can also get your dissertation published in a book form.
a) Find an academic press interested in your field of study and specializing in publishing dissertations. It is also advisable to consult with some academic publishers as they might show interest in publishing your work, depending on the field, quality of research, the topic you have chosen, etc.
b) You will have to submit a book proposal to a publisher which should explain the material you wish to publish. Do not submit the complete manuscript unless they are interested.
c) If you find an academic press interested in publishing your dissertation, they will most likely have a few revisions for you to make. They usually have a peer review process, so you will surely receive responses from two or three senior scholars of your field.

  1. Self-Publishing:

Dissertation advice for self-publishing is simple. If you prefer to just have some bound copies of your dissertation to share it with your friends, family, etc, then you may use a service like Lulu.com. Although self publishing is an option but not recommended as it will cost too much. If you wish to have few bound copies to keep them in your bookshelf, then you can check your university's library. Every university library has a bound copy of all dissertations or theses on the shelves or in the archives somewhere. You can pay them to bind a couple more copies for you.

There are few more routes you can take than explained above to get your dissertation published such as “Conference Proceedings”. This happens to be the easiest of all the routes. You just have to present a paper at a conference and then either publish an abstract or full dissertation later on.

The most important dissertation advice when it comes to getting your dissertation published would be, not to lose hope. Without previous experience of publication, it is not easy to get your dissertation published. You will have to discuss this matter with your advisor, the academic society for your field and your university’s reference librarians. They all can help you in knowing more avenues open to you.

In order to own the copyright, it is advisable to first bind your dissertation. Then fill out the copyright form. If you are in the UK, submit the form and the required number of bound copies to The British Library. If you are in the USA, submit the form and the required number of bound copies to The Library of Congress.

P:S. Try the ' Writers Year Book 2007'. It has a list of every British publisher with their specialties / generalities. It's priceless and easier to sort through than online. For UK students who are pursuing Masters Degrees, it is fairly difficult to get it published as a mere MSc student.

ICAATS Resource: Untold Benefits Of Distance Learning Programs

By: Christy Jon

Distance learning can be started within the serenity of your home. You can receive your sound and qualitative education from the internet without moving around too much. Online distance education enables you to learn effectively and with ease.

It can be quite frustrating to remain stagnant at your workplace while other people are getting promoted. If you are constantly passed up for a promotion because your qualifications don’t measure up, enroll for an online distance learning program. With an online distance learning program, you can step up on the ladder of promotion faster.

Without the Internet distance learning would have remained extremely difficult and expensive. Many people today consider it both, but they have never had to deal with it back in the day when all correspondence was on phone, running up enormous bills; or when lecture notes had to be sent by post, taking never-ending days and weeks before delivery. With the Internet most of these problems are now a thing of the past.

The success of Charles Wedemeyer’s AIM (Articulated Instructional Media) in the United States from 1964 to 1968 prompted the opening of UK’s Open University. A lot of the concepts that were visited, including extensive communications technology advancements, were very useful in starting up and instituting subsequent distance learning programs.

Chatting on the Internet is not really a favorite technique for passing bulky information in distance education. Unless you can do away with the typing and use just the voice option, you are not likely to enjoy it. If your professor insists, though, you haven’t a choice.

When giving assignments, colleges and professors often make them extremely difficult. This is to discourage their distance learning students as much as possible from seeking outside help. Doing the assignment gets so involving that the students are forced to study, and in so doing, to learn and earn their degrees.

If you move around a lot, chances are that your education is often disrupted. You can opt for a distance learning program and avoid your educational process being interrupted. With distance learning, you can learn anywhere and at anytime.

Distance learning isn’t so different from on campus learning. The only thing that distinguishes distance learning from on-campus learning is the absence of the classroom setting and the teacher or lecturer.

ICAATS Resource: Here's What I Found About Adult Education

By: Andy Ernest

There are many courses of study these days. You simply have to fall into the type that pertains to your lot in life. People who were unable to get schooled while they grew can get adult education and choose the course they want to study. It is a lot better than having nothing at all.

If you think your current education background does not serve you well enough, you could still get more education. Some might think it too late, considering age and all, but that is not true. Whatever kind of person you are, someone has got the right kind of education for you. Just look it up.

A lot of companies will refuse to hire people if they think they don’t qualify – it’s only to be expected. Even with a basic diploma, you might need higher qualifications to make the cut. Going back to school at this age may be tough, but it might also be your only shot.

You know that in the United States, the quality of jobs you can get is all about that college degree. Sometimes, that six figure salary is only another level of education away. Well, I've got a secret for you: you are not too old to go get it. Adults around you are; why not you?

There are lots of adult education programs to be had all over the world. You can decide to sequester yourself at some facility to study, or you can do it long distance while still going to work daily. If you to add value to yourself, it is something you might have to do sometime.

Sometimes it is not the quality or quantity of the degree you hold that counts – sometimes it is the fact that you have a degree. Getting a job can be as simple as that. The tough part is for you to decide to still do some schooling at that age when others are settling down to marital life. You can if you want to. I did.

Studying is good, especially when you are young; studying further is even better, especially when you aspire for more. The thing about studying further is merely that you are no longer a child, and a lot of those things that seemed to be so easy aren’t quite so easy anymore. But that’s what adult education is all about.

A hiring manager might look to you like the barrier between your success and you, but that is not true. The poor dude is just following orders: he cannot hire anyone who does not have a degree. In that case, you are the person who is standing in your own way. Even adults go to school, why shouldn't you?

University credit programs can be made flexible enough for adults also to study. As a matter of fact, they already are. Some of the most popular colleges and institutions in the United States have some of the most reputable adult education schemes you could ever hope for. Your way out of a life of misery, right there.

You might not be able to get a high school diploma because you can't return to high school at this time of your life. However, several schools have adult education schemes that offer parallels of such qualifications. And then if you want it, you may go further still.

Many adults in organizations are unable to read or write. Sometimes the organization agrees to bring in scholars and tutors for just such a purpose. It is still a form of adult education, just like the studying for a professional qualification or something.

The activities of an adult education system may be focused on single needs such as reading and writing. On another front, it could be geared more towards the professional. Anyone interested needs to find some niche into which they fit so that they can maximize their potentials.

Often you will find that adult education courses are adjusted in special ways to meet the special needs of adults. A lot of the extraneous material that you will find in high school and even college are done away with. You are recognized as someone who wishes to learn, but you are also respected as an adult in your own right.

Adult education is all about exploring dreams and possibilities. Even if you have a home to cater for, you can eke a living during the day and study at night. By the time you are done, you may then apply for any of those classy jobs you have always wanted. And that would be the beginning of a new life for you, practically.

The prototype that many adult education institutions and programs are based on today is 1874s Chautauqua movement. A place for Christians who wanted to learn at first, it became a model summer training scheme that many still look up to today. By '76 it was perhaps the most popular such program that America knew at the time, with universities springing up, offering extension programs that brought education directly to the public.

Innovative Sites Provide Opportunities for Knowledge Creation and Sharing

By: Chris Robertson

If you've ever wanted to have an encyclopedia at your fingertips - or contribute to a public encyclopedia, - you'll embrace a growing trend: online knowledge sharing. This type of collaborative, question-driven knowledge system gathers questions and answers on thousands - or hundreds of thousands - of topics, and then organizes the topics and provides easy access to the knowledge base for users. In practice, college students benefit because they can contribute what they know, as well as learn about a variety of topics. It also acts as a social network, in that they can also form communities with those who have similar interests and work together to create a reliable source of information on specific topics.

For writers, such an encyclopedia provides them with the opportunity to share their knowledge with others, as well as to use the knowledge base as a source of research for their work. Generally speaking, a question-driven knowledge system enables anyone to ask questions on topics that do not yet appear. Then, an expert in that particular field can provide a reliable, knowledgeable answer. It's a quick, easy way to get the research needed for essays, term papers, and articles.

How to Spot the Best Share and Create Systems

When it comes to knowledge sites, look for one that provides easy search mechanisms for finding questions and answers. This way, you won't get frustrated reading redundant questions. The best sites also provide a bookmark feature, so questions can be saved for future reference or for update notifications. Other features of the best sites include a discussion forum that is separate from the knowledge base, community-building features, and the ability to check the editing history of a question or of a contributor.

Sometimes, knowledge-based create-and-share websites offer incentives for contributions, such as free advertising or ads revenue sharing. As the knowledge base grows and attracts new college students, writers, and professionals, these incentives tend to grow.

Daily Expansion

A knowledge-driven site's question and answer system typically grows on a daily basis, and eventually covers tens of thousands of topics. The topics can range from gardening, parenting, and pets to gas mileage, mortgages, and water conservation. That's one reason why college students and writers find this type of service helpful. Since they often research a variety of topics on a regular basis, this one-stop system is perfect.

These kinds of specific Web services are bringing together professionals, writers, and college students to create a vast knowledge base, special knowledge-sharing communities, and questions and answers that can benefit anyone in any field. And the best news of all is these sites are free for everyone to enjoy. It's like having a group of experts on speed dial!

ICAATS: Why Standardize Theology 003

History is our witness that when there is no yardstick to measure things, people free to do project their offering as the best -- even if it is the worst available. The same is true of education, hospital services, transport services, and any other type of public service. The same is true of theological education.

Thus some kind of yardstick, whether it is mandatory or not, always helps to improve quality. It helps people to know what is an "acceptable" minimum quality and what is above that -- and also how high above the acceptable standard is it. Thus drawing up minimum acceptable standards for theological seminaries has always helped both the parties in the long run: those who provide education and those who benefit from it.

ICAATS: Why Standardize Theology 002

While education is not a consumer product, all education is a kind of a product given to students who are a type of consumers. Here I am using the words products and consumers in a non commercial manner.

When more than one product is available, every consumer wishes to have the best in his reach. In the same way, when plenty of theological institutions are available, students would want the best that they can afford and the best to which they can get admitted.

The concept of "best" immediately brings the concept of quality and that is one reason why theological education has to be standardized.

ICAATS: Why Standardize Theology 001

As soon as one talks about accreditation of theological education, people who have never been exposed to these things  immediately conjure up images of centralization, one-man control, antichrist, etc. More so in churches that tend to be autonomous. This is because of a misunderstanding.

When we buy a product from a well known company, we expect it to deliver quality. That is why we shell out extra money, though a the same product might be available from a nondescript company. The well known company is able to offer quality product because of quality control. The same is the job of accreditation in theological education -- quality control.

ICAATS: Reactions 002

While it is fine for a radically oriented theological seminary not to admit students who come from a conservative background, the theological radicals in India did not stop at that. This is totally different from what is seen the the world of learning.

Different schools of thought exist in the world of education and research, and they co exist happily in spite of the differing opinions. However, since the theological world is a more closely knit group, the radicals were not happy to co exist with theological conservatives.

Thus from the 1950s the theological radicals in India tried their best to stamp out theologically conservative institutions. This came in the form of academic boycott, social boycott, and even nasty writings againt conservative institutions in India.

The trend has now become worldwide. Theologically radical institutions cannot tolerate theologically conservative institutions.

ICAATS An Assessment 004

Numerous Bible Colleges, seminaries and other institutions from several countries expressed their interest in getting ICAATS help. Institutions from Middle East, Far East, Africa and Eastern Europe were very responsive, particularly from those countries where open confession of the Christian faith is either forbidden, or is restricted.

People from these countries wanted to have an advisor and an informal or formal accreditor who would help them to establish quality theological education for their priest or pastoral candidates. This immediately demonstrated to the ICAATS volunteers that they can become a niche player in theological accreditation and standardization by helping those who cannot seek open help.

A good example is Indonesia, where the government is hostile to the idea of establishing a Christian training institution. ICAATS got them linked with an Indian institution that was able to offer them a quality curriculum and also all the training materials they needed for establishing an institution.

After much deliberation between the three parties, an institution was established as a "branch" of the Indian seminary and this helped them to overcome legal hurdles that other face. Also, it was all kept a low key affair so as not get adverse publicity to this institution based in Indonesia.

This way ICAATS soon rose to become a niche player in standardizing theological education behind the iron curtain, the bamboo curtain, and difficult borders.
